Photographic Philosophy
“Photography is where science and creativity collide”
I use this statement in both my Judging and Talks, to explain the vast range of genres and photographers aims. For example, on one end of the spectrum, some photographers are very technically based and are focused on precise replication; whereas on the other end of the spectrum, photographers are less interested the technical detail but more the creative thus their imagery is not precise replication and is more to be interpreted. I believe this is important to understand as it changes the objective of the photographer and thus how one views an image.
Unfortunately, this understanding is often missing with in the realms of camera clubs and despite being involved with camera clubs for many years, it still exasperates me to listen to speakers and judges who fail to understand this key point thus narrowing the creativity of club member’s work.
