Hello, I am Ian Ryall

Quick Bio

My father taught me how to use my first SLR camera and darkroom skills at the age of 10. Ever since I have been a keen photographer. I studied photography at school achieving both a GCSE and an A-Level in the subject. However, I followed a career in accounting, business and technology, enjoying photography and my interest in film as a hobby. Whilst at university, I was involved in the Photographic Society and also enjoyed involvement of a number of film projects.

After a number years my photographic interest dwindled, which was probably due to the loss of easy access to a darkroom.  As technology developed, I discovered digital photography and acquired my first DSLR. This, very quickly led me to enter the world of the Camera Club originally joining Ongar Photographic Society and then moving to Loughton Camera Club where I became president for six years. I do hold an accreditation in photography, but do not actively use it as I find the three main accrediation bodies do not necessarily acknowledge the true range of photograghy and thus can be limiting.

Recently, I decided to change my career to another passion of mine and now work in aviation.

Photographic approach and interests

During my formal tuition of photography as part of my GCSE and A-levels, I was taught that Photography is an art medium and to appreciate and indeed excel in Photography one needs to be exposed and understand other art forms.

Although, I participate and experiment in many genres, I feel my most successful work is linked very much to my interests in cinema.  Sometimes, this may be a clear homage to a film and sometimes it may be an image that has a feel that it is a scene from a film.  I have a particular habit, although often unintentional, of weaving a sinister undertone or tension into the image.  Emotions of isolation are also sometimes found within my images.  People, both modelled and not, are often key components.  I generally look to generate an emotional response from the viewer.  Other areas I focus on are by gone days especially architecture from the around mid 1900’s and water such as the sea.

Because of my interest in cinema and that I like quirky and interesting concepts, I created an ambigram of my name for my logo. As such it can be read upside down.
