I judge differently.
Yes, that is a bold statement, but I deliberately try to avoid the
normal cliches which hear from judges.
I believe the job of the judge at a camera club is to articulate
how they interpret an image as a third party and to explain why they feel one
image has achieved its aim more than an another.
Judging cold (not studying the images prior to competition), I
articulate with enthusiasm, how I see the image, what I like and admire, how it
makes me feel, what I think the photographer is trying present me and the
purpose of the image. I will acknowledge
photographic techniques and tricks. If I
feel a certain tool of composition would be useful to the image, I will explain
why it may be preferable.
I do not believe that all images must be pin sharp, highlights always
have to be dulled, you can’t use pure blacks have and sun is never white. It
all depends on the aim of the image and I have a very open mind.
I also do not look for faults just so I can say something!
“Often when judges leave I get various contradictory comments over
the evening, not tonight, everyone was talking about how positive and
enthusiastic you are over the images” Halstead Photographic
Society
“You have a refreshing style and your comments are always on point.
I like the way that you express how an image makes you feel. Plus you give a clear & rationale explanations re why
you are not holding back an image but do it in a supportive way.” Brentwood Camera
Club
“We would love to invite you back to Walthamstow to judge for us
next year as your friendly, chatty style goes down really well” Walthamstow
